“My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Legacies basketball program. The coaches are energetic and supportive and their positive energy is contagious. All of the players feel included (while having a lot of fun) and the “team” aspect is strong! The players really support one another as well, cheering their teammates on for their successes! Being a part of this program has been a tremendous confidence boost for my daughter and a wonderful overall experience! She has bonded with both the coaches and her teammates! I would highly recommend the program to anyone!”
"I have two kids that play for team Legacy. Coach Beckahh sent me a random text one afternoon on how she wanted my son, Landon, to play on her basketball team. She had built this relationship with him and a bunch of kids at school and thought he would be great for her team. When she first asked I knew he had been asking to play for a while but he was struggling at his school work. So, the first year I turned her down, with a promise that if my son tried his hardest in school and got his grades up I would let him play in 5th grade. My son made it his goal to do better in school to be a part of this team.
His 5th grade year rolled around and she asked again. I let him play. I mentioned to Coach Beckahh that if his grades or behavior slip he will have to sit the bench. Not knowing that she had the same expectations for her players. We showed up to the first practice and there was about 10 kids there. She provided rides for more than half of the team. She started each practice off with a thing called “owning up.” During this time the kids form and circle and talked about there day at school or home and if there was any issues. They talked about how they could have resolved it and how they could do better. The first practice I remember we spent most of the time talking about how they can treat teachers and parents better. I remember leaving that practice confused because I thought we were here to play basketball. It wasn’t until the 2nd or 3rd practice till I realized what Coach was really trying to do here. Coach Beckahh and Katie were not only here to teach the game of basketball but also life’s lessons and how to help each other out during school and created a family within the basketball team.
Each practice more and more kids would join the team, by the end of the season coach had to split the teams up in to two different teams. All while having two boys teams they decided to start a girls team. When she asked me about my daughter I knew there was no chance she would want to do play. Peyton, I am sure told her no multiple times at school. With the help of coach Beckahh and her friends Peyton said she would play (sit the bench and hang outside of school with friends). She was so scared and never wanted to go to practice. Since my son also played she would go to his practices to learn the game. The boys started letting her practice with them as well and cheered her on the whole way. I can’t even begin to tell you the difference and confidence that I witnessed from my daughter. Within the next couple of months my shy and quiet Peyton went from wanting to sit the bench to starting.
Coach Beckahh and Katie have really helped shape the life of not only my kids but to me and my husband as well. Watching them with our children and other children has really opened our eyes to want to do more. Not only do they teach the love of the game but they hold them accountable and help them with issues they have in their own lives and school. They provide different volunteering events for the kids to give back to the community. They provide rides, shoes, socks, water bottles, and food to some of these kids out of their own pockets. They talked with the YMCA to get the kids to play on a scholarship since a majority of them don’t have the means to pay. I have witnessed Coach Katie take off the shoes she was wearing for one of the players when they forgot theirs. These are only the things I have seen first hand, I am almost positive there is more that I don’t see. They make practice fun and everyone usually has a smile on their face. These kids are always cheering and encouraging each other. Since some of the boys and girls games fall on the same night, and the coaches give a majority of the rides they stay and cheer for each other during the games.
Another thing I wanted to mention is how they go out of their way to make the kids feel part of a family. Coach Beckahh knew that we are USD fans. She went out of her way to get a hold of one of the girls basketball players from USD that we went to watch during the Sweet 16. She sent Peyton a message on how she heard that Peyton was trying really hard and that she as well never wanted to play basketball and to keep going because now she is living her best life playing ball everyday for USD and hoping for WNBA. That message meant the world to Peyton and pushed her even more.
I could go on and on about this program and how is changed my children for the better. The sense of belonging and the determination to continue to work hard in school and on the court. Thank you Coach Beckahh and Coach Katie for all that you do for this program and the kids that are apart of it! Go team Legacy"
